3/17 – Supporting our LGBTQIA+ communities

Dear Trojan Community,

With the rights of LGBTQIA+ – especially transgender and gender diverse – Americans under legislative attack in statehouses around the country, I want to express my unwavering support for and commitment to our LGBTQIA+ communities.

More than 200 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills have already been introduced this year. Many of these proposals target LGBTQIA+ youth and would have devastating impacts on their emotional and physical well-being if passed into law – ranging from prohibiting the teaching of identity issues in public schools, to banning books with LGBTQIA+ themes, to restricting access to restrooms and locker rooms consistent with their identities, to denying access to gender affirming health care. The mere introductions of these bills – even if they do not pass – send damaging messages.

At USC, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where every individual, regardless of their gender or sexual identity, is respected and appreciated. Well-being is one of our core values, and our campuses will always be places that care deeply about our LGBTQIA+ students, faculty, and staff. We will always stand with our LGBTQIA+ communities.

Sincerely,

Carol L. Folt
