Due to the current disruptions Covid-19, early academic year start, and campus-based populations, we are updating you with information related to the charges for the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) that will be reflected in your Fall 2020 tuition statement.
The University of Southern California requires USC students to carry comprehensive health insurance, either through the USC Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP, provided through Aetna, which does have comprehensive benefits throughout the U.S.), or a comparable plan that meets the minimum criteria. This applies to students taking 6 or more units of classes, all students in health profession degree programs, and all international students.
To ensure that students in these categories have insurance coverage, students are automatically enrolled in SHIP, and the charge appears on the semesterly tuition bill. U.S.-based students may waive SHIP by completing the waiver form before the semester deadline. The Fall 2020 deadline is September 11, 2020.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS—INSURANCE EXEMPTION
If you are an international student and are residing outside of the United States for the fall semester, you are exempt from Student Health Insurance requirements. Update your current address in OASIS; and email studenthealth@usc.edu with the subject line “INTL SHIP Reversal Credit” and your student ID number. You do not need to complete the waiver.
TRADITIONAL CAMPUS-BASED DEGREE PROGRAM STUDENTS—EXPLANATION OF CHARGES
(Includes all undergraduate students, and graduate students in campus-based degree programs)
For students in campus-based degree programs, you are assessed a rate for insurance premium that totals $782 for the fall semester (8/19/20-1/10/21). If you are a new student to the program, there is an additional $29 early start charge for insurance coverage for the early start period (8/10/20-8/14/20) if you are new to the university or have not been previously covered through SHIP in the preceding semester.
- $782, SHIP Insurance Premium for campus-based degree program students
- $29, Early Start Period Premium (Coverage) is included
- $753 is the total for continuing students; a credit of $29 will be applied
Due to our current billing infrastructure, you will receive a $29 credit if you are a student continuing from the preceding semester’s SHIP plan.
ONLINE DEGREE PROGRAM STUDENTS—EXPLANATION OF CHARGES
(Students in graduate programs that are exclusively online-based degree programs)
For students in fully online degree programs, you are assessed a rate for insurance premium that totals $1,384 for the fall semester (8/19/20-1/10/21). If you are a new student to the program, there is an additional $55 early start charge for insurance coverage for the early start period (8/10/20-8/14/20) if you are new to the university; or have not been previously covered through SHIP in the preceding semester.
- $1,384, SHIP Insurance Premium for Online Degree Program Students
- $55, Early Start Period Premium (Coverage)
- $1,439 is the total for students new to SHIP, with early start
- $1,384 is the total for continuing students
Due to our current billing infrastructure, you will be charged in two separate amounts:
For students new in the SHIP program (not enrolled in the previous semester)
- $782, initial charge
- $657, later charge
- The total amount is $1,439.
For students continuing in the SHIP program (enrolled in the previous semester)
